Response to assignment 2.

My response to my feedback from assignment 2:

Firstly, I think I did quite well during this course again. I did have some unfortunate events happen to me during this assignment yet I still powered on and completed the work although I may not have spent as much time as wished on this part of the course, I do think if I spend more time developing onto my work I will improve and get more outstanding work. Throughout my feedback it is mentioned that a few of my pieces could have done with some extra work to fully make an improvement but I think I can take this feedback and act on it in my next assignment.

A lot of my feedback revolves around lack of depth perhaps due to working fast during this project but then also it’s mentioned I’m too heavy on the outer-line of my objects drawings and again paying less attention to the lighting, I may sometimes go off what I think would look right in a drawing and I need to stay clear of this because it doesn’t create an accurate and realistic piece of work. Also mentioned is for me to step out of my comfort zone and experiment with different materials as I always stick to what I know works best for me, I think I agree I do seem to use the same materials when doing my work just because I know that works for me but if I step out and try different things I may find new unique ways to display my work that I prefer.

Furthermore, it is talked about that it isn’t clear I am using my sketch book for independent  sketches, because of this I am going to make a strong effort to take more time to do quick sketches of still life and document them in my research part of my blog as well as reflecting my work to ideas from artist research.

In my list of things I should try and do it says about doing independent drawings in my sketch book and uploading them to my blog, my tutor also suggested watching youtube videos of certain artists to get me more appealed to using different materials and getting more ideas to experiment with my work. So I will make a strong effort to complete all of these task and spend more time on my work and picking out the materials I choose to use.

Assignment Two – Final piece’s.

For this assignment we were asked to experiment with colours and show different ways of mark making throughout taking ideas from our previous’ exercises to get a rough idea of what to do.

Therefore for this assignment I began with two small pieces to get an idea of some experimental work with mixed media. I wasn’t to keen on the results of these two designs so went back and thought through what might be better for me to do, therefore I went for a kitchen/cooking style still life and tried two methods I felt comfortable with.  Below is a picture of my first drawing where I just used a sketch pencil and toned with the shadows and tried to go in depth with the shadows etc.unnamed (1).jpg

As you can see in the final outcome of this piece I have tried hard to focus on the tonal work of these objects and have continuously used different mark making from crosshatching to using a rubber to make marks in the lighter parts of the objects. I like how this piece looks as I think the lay out of the objects is effective and you can clearly see where the light is hitting the still life. I feel like in this drawing I have developed within using harsh lines for the outline of the objects as in I haven’t shown heavy lines throughout and the tonal work in general is a big improvement on my past piece’s of work. I strongly enjoyed doing this still life piece and think the out come is good.

Moving on to piece two I took the same still life and just coloured the drawing in the best way I could seen as the big part of the picture was the pan which is already silver. Looking past that, it was a big difference to work with colour as I’m not usually one to work with coloured pencils yet I enjoyed doing it and think I’ll further with doing this in the future. Here is a picture below of my result:

unnamed (2).jpg

Again in this drawing I used a range of different mark makings to enhance the different tones of the objects, I do like how this piece turned out I think the colours pop the image out more and it makes it look more realistic, I think I still need to work more on using colours as it’s only been a couple of times for me using it, but I think doing more personal trials in my sketch book it will help me improve my skills. I am however happy with how this turned out, I think when I do these style of drawings again I will try and include a back drop to make the full image come more to life. All in all I think I have improved in my drawing skill since first starting and I’m happy with how I am coming along. I do think to improve my skills now I will try to add little details into my work and also doing a back setting will help the image come alive a lot more.

Assignment 2- Practice and planning.

In preparation for this assignment I wanted to test out a couple of different ideas I had to then take further with the style I preferred,  I wanted to do this piece and reflect on the style I have been doing throughout my work and I found most comfortable with me that shows what I have learnt throughout this project so far. I also picked to be a little experimental with the work and try something different to see and attempt that as well.

I first decided to do this because I wanted to experiment with different ways I could incorporate colour like the brief suggests. I wanted to see how the watercolours would go with the design and using different colours to create bold effects, heres a picture of my result:

unnamed (3).jpg

I found that this piece didn’t go as I had firstly envision, therefore I decided to re-do this piece after because the colours weren’t as bold as I wanted it to look and the whole thing just didn’t look correct. I thought I would add this picture as a way to show what I have done to experiment with different materials, I think this piece would look good if I used a different brush. I found the brushes I did use weren’t effective and they weren’t very good material therefore I’ve found a different set to use next time I re-do this piece.

I just feel this piece wasn’t the best I could perform and I didn’t look at it and feel I had done my best therefore I think if I try with this again it might have a different result and I’ll feel different about using watercolours on the final piece. I think that the sketch is fairly accurate I would just like to do different tonal work in another trail to really see if I can make that concept work.

unnamed (4)

For my second experimental for this assignment was biro and the use of coloured pencils, I thought that this might look effective and if I thought the biro was too much I thought I’d just choose to do it without it. I think this piece turned out well although I think I used too much of a heavy hand on the outlines of the objects and wanted to show more with the tonal work which I will do in my next copy. Here is the picture of my result:

I do like how this piece turned out although I think I went a bit too heavy handed on the outline of the objects I want to try again with this also to see if I can get a more realistic outlook on it and also go a little more bold with the colours, the picture doesn’t really show the colour I had added so I think I will re do this as well just to trail to see what I actually do want to do for my final piece, I also think I’m going to reflect through my previous exercises and see what might be a good way to represent colour and tone in this final piece and put together a more effective piece than these two.

All in all, I am glad I did these trail because it’s made me see I need to re try and spend a little more time considering what I could do for this final piece and step out a bit more from my normal style.

Exercise One- Warming up

For this task we were asked to do a temporary drawing by using materials we wouldn’t normally use, for example I used a suggested material such as pouring and dripping in washing up liquid into the sink. Here are my results:52630636_257939171793562_6639598988087525376_n52607847_388504848646694_8469191838559895552_n52917965_2209259775796986_7512554934995255296_n.jpg

In this task I just decided to have some fun, I found it therapeutic when pouring the liquid into the sink it was very nice to see it drop and drizzle easily. When I’d done that I went to get a cocktail stick to do a little drawing within the liquid with it; I soon found out you could do no such thing as the liquid would soon cover it back up. Instead I just went in with my finger and create movement in the liquid to create bold lines and just random patterns.

All in all, I didn’t doing this task, because when I draw I like my drawings to stay put and the fact every-time I would create a marking it got erased was annoying to me, yet when I used my finger it got a lot easier and I preferred it then. I do wish I had gotten someone to take a picture of me doing this yet I was home alone whilst doing this exercise.

Assignment One.

For this assignment we were asked to gather a bunch of items to create a still life piece of art gathering all the techniques we just learnt during our first few exercises and explore them more in one piece on either A3 or A2 piece of paper.

I decided to gather a bunch of kitchen utensils and objects therefore I had objects which connected in a way and looked right together and get a more realistic setting for my still life drawing, below is a picture of my sight:

53183586_2215865038730827_2723920408616108032_n.jpg

As shown on this picture above I wanted to create some different angles for all of the objects so they’re not just next to each other, instead I hid objects behind others and leaned things onto each-other therefore it created more of an interesting piece of work rather than just drawings of the objects. I found also in my previous tasks I had used objects depending on there shape and how they looked as objects next to each other rather than them connecting in a theme and there use therefore I wanted to change that and choose something I haven’t tried before; that being using objects which connect and are used in the same way.

Below is a picture of my result:

53352515_2322001208081325_6785604545889173504_n.jpg

In this drawing I wanted to use different techniques and materials which I have learnt to use and experimented with in my previous exercises, for this I first used a pencil to draft out my drawing and get all of the angles and shapes accurate, after this I went in more depth with my graphite and used different techniques such as cross hatching to show the darker tones and create some detail into my drawings. After this for the pan I wanted to go in with charcoal to get some more detail into this piece and work with a different material, in this part of the image I decided to use dots also to show the darker tones on the image.

All in all I found this piece went well, I think I wished I chose more intricate objects therefore I could’ve shown off my drawing skill more by showing detail within my objects yet I think I have shown the different techniques I have used within this piece. I like how the charcoal turned out and how I have learnt how to use this material more because in previous exercises I found it hard to control and do any type of tonal work with this material yet I am happy with the tones in this piece, I think this is just because I have become more used to using this tool and have adapted my drawing style with it. I think during these exercises and this assignment I have learnt different ways to present a drawing and how different materials can create different techniques within a drawing as well as focusing on the negative space as well as the positive space.

Composition- an interior.

For this exercise we were asked to pick one of the rooms from our previous exercise and enhance and look more in detail of the layout and objects in the room. We were told to use a soft material to do quick sketches and find an angle we were comfortable with recreating.

I chose to do this exercise using a soft pencil as I found it was the material I am most used to using and am comfortable with showing tone with using this medium. I also chose to do this exercise with the living room, I chose this room due to it having good lighting during the day and I enjoyed recreating and drawing this room in the previous exercise. I chose to do all of these sketches landscape, I did this because all of the sketches I was doing fit better when landscape and I would fit more of what I envisioned on the page. Below is a picture of my results:

I think the sketches I have done for this exercise turned out well and the tones I have showed are an accurate representation of what I was seeing, I made quick visual notes and changed my view each time. I enjoyed doing this exercise the same as the last I liked being able to do quick sketches and not worry too much on the final look although I do think that the sketches turned out well and how I’d imagined. All in all I think this exercise was a success and I think I have built more of a skill when coming to identifying lighting and doing quick and detailed sketches.

Quick sketches around the house.

Quick sketches around the house.

For this exercise we were asked to grab out sketch book and a soft pencil and make our way around each room in the house making fast visual observations and making four quick sketches from four view points of the room. In this exercise I decided to do sketches of : living room, dining room, kitchen and my bedroom. I didn’t feel like I needed to draw the toilets or my parents room. Below is a pictures of the results:

Living Room.

This room I found interesting to draw as there was a lot of different items and I enjoyed looking closely at the textures and depth of the items instead of glancing at them like I usually do in my daily life. I found it was difficult to scale things down but once I did I liked recreating a miniature version of the sights I was seeing, all in all I liked doing this room as I found it fun to recreate and scale down the furniture and it was more of an easy room to recreate through my drawing.

Dining Room.

The dining room was my least favourite and I disliked recreating this room all together, I found that the items were difficult to represent in the angles I was seeing and to make it look realistic was difficult. I wasn’t too impressed with my final outcome of this room and I found it was pretty bland. The chairs were difficult to position in my drawings to look on the right angle. I would not like to work on drawing this room again.

Kitchen.

I enjoyed doing the kitchen the same as the living room, I found it was fun to recreate the character of the room and to get to terms again with the layout and texture of the room I go into everyday. The cabinets turned out to be a challenge but I felt like the end result really worked out and the sketches I produced were an accurate viewing of what I was visually seeing when sketching. All in all it was one of my favourite rooms to recreate.

Bedroom.

I think that this room was my favourite. Seen as my bedroom is my canvas to create with as I live with my parents I loved really looking into the details and sketching out the room I have picked everything out for. I loved filling in the details and placing things exactly how it was seen in front of me, I think this was the easiest room I had to recreate through sketching.

Overview:

This exercise was really fun, I loved recreating the place I live in and looking at things more in depth than usual to sketch it out. I found it helped a lot with coming to terms with quick still life sketches and helped me advance my sketching skills. The room I most enjoyed recreating was my bedroom as it’s personal to me and I had fun creating a miniature version of where I spend most of my time. All in all I found this exercise really helped me advance on my skills and made me think more about how to view and angle my drawings.

Experimenting with mixed media

In this exercise we were asked to experiment with using traditional art tools and adding non traditional art methods to the work to get used to working with different ways of creating art and experimenting with different techniques and materials.

Therefore for this exercise I decided to work with soft pastels and then go in with a paintbrush and work with water over the top. A method I haven’t experimented with before and I found the result interesting. Below is a picture of my result:

IMG_6942 2.jpeg

As shown I have decided to draw out a fruit bowl and then I went in with using soft pastels and smudging and working them in to try to create tones throughout each bit using different colours and also combining two different tones. I then decided to go in with water to see how that could effect the soft pastels to try to blend the colours more and create tones.

All in all I found this turned out well and I think the water over the top of the soft pastels turned out really well, I was surprised how well they blended together once using the water, I would try this technique again further in my art work because I found the combination turned out well.

Review of Project two.

Review of project two.

For these two exercises I found the materials I used were both successful and I was happy with how well I was able to adapt to using them and learn quickly how to show tone. The one thing I would say was a bit more unsuccessful was figuring out how to place and show the objects and to also get a lighting onto them which showed the different tones and shadows onto them to create an interesting piece.

I think with these piece I did manage to get a good sense of depth and really work at getting an accurate representation of the objects, trying my best to get an accurate scale at the same time. For getting this so accurate I found an aspect that helped was to see the background and to see clearly how it was set out.

I found being restricted to just using lines and tone interesting, seen as I normally have more freedom when drawing I found it different experimenting with new techniques and being restricted to one style. It was a bit more difficult doing things straight from using a non erasable material was difficult because I normally like to map out my drawings before I go fully in with a permanent material.

I found I worked a little differently using colour in my drawings because I couldn’t erase anything out after drawing it, I also found it was different to blend in the colours into each other and it was a different technique to show tone into the drawing but all in all I found it a good exercise to get used to using colours within my work.

Still life in tone using colour

Still life in tone using colour.

For this exercise we were asked to draw out objects using a coloured material and then change colours every time the tone on the objects changed. We were told it could take us more than one attempt to get a piece we’re pleased with.

For this piece I chose to line up two containers and draw those out, I decided the best media for me to use was coloured pencils and I did this exercise in 2 pieces using two different colour methods and one I liked better than the other. Below is the pictures of my results:

IMG_6938 2.jpeg

IMG_6937 2.jpeg

I found this exercise interesting to do, I have never used coloured pencils to do tonal work like this before and I found it quite an interesting way of showing tone. I wanted to stick to the same colours but in a different shade or tone therefore it wouldn’t look as messy as using completely different colours. I found I preferred how the first attempt I did turned out, the reds seemed to blend well together and created quite a tonal representation of the objects I was trying to recreate.

For this exercise I used a different style of technique when showing the different tones as well as doing some detail using cross hatching. I found the way I have used the coloured pencils has made the drawing look quite realistic and an accurate presentation of what my view of the objects was.

All in all I am happy with how both of there pieces have turned out although I was more impressed with my first piece due to the colours having more blend-able features and really showing the shadows and tones change throughout the objects. I haven’t really experimented with using colours for using tones before so I found it fun to use this media in my work and I will practice tones with colours more in my spare time.
